OH LOOK NOTHING - KLANGAUSTREIBUNG - WAITING TO BE TUNED - PERFEKTE QUINTE

OH LOOK NOTHING, 2022 (excerpt, SUPPORTER, 2022) – 4k video, 2 channel audio, 6 min

OH LOOK NOTHING acts as a metronome for the unfoldings in the audiovisual multi-channel installation SUPPORTER, a duo show by Filip Caranica and Julio Ernesto Herrera Flores, shown at NKR Düsseldorf in 2022. OH LOOK NOTHING unites the videos WAITING TO BE TUNED and KLANGAUSTREIBUNG [Sound Exorcism] as well as Herrera Flores’ installation VORTEX as an audiovisual entity.

In the audiovisual works WAITING TO BE TUNED and KLANGAUSTREIBUNG, a map of Germany leaves the realm of the symbolic, becoming a meaty rag. In its new flesh-like physical form, the landmass that is commonly depicted without its neighbouring countries, is akin to the skin of a drum that has become detached from its frame. As a meaty rag, the map is incapable of emitting or receiving vibrations. WAITING TO BE TUNED and KLANGAUSTREIBUNG critically reflect on nation-statehood and cultural identity in the context of increasingly global crises.

The exhibition SUPPORTER combines 3D-animated videos, sound, spatial paintings and objects in a landscape of audiovisual interactions. Based on a fundamental interest in the evocative energy of sound and the myth of the sublime in art, the works on display centre the themes of Rausch – the German word for states of frenzy – and the formation of national and cultural identity. A map of Germany that has become a meaty rag is probed and prodded by a branch. Carried by elegiac, bellowing hooligan chants, the map is moved by blasts of air from a rotating beer bottle, while in a vortex-shaped room a column of spray paint-dripping beer crates becomes a site of hymnic toxicity.

PERFEKTE QUINTE, 2022 (SUPPORTER, 2022) – 2 channel audio, 27 sec

The piece PERFEKTE QUINTE [Perfect Fifth] is based on a counterpoint in the style of early baroque German sacred music, which is a substantial part of the foundation upon which the formation and preservation of German cultural identity is carried out. Clothed in a toxically aggressive garment of electronic sounds, the counterpoint in PERFEKTE QUINTE takes a satirical look at the potential of a connection between cultural archiving and political marginalisation.
